About Market Gallery:
Market Gallery is a charitable artist-run organisation facilitated by a rolling committee of artists, a programme administrator and a board based in Glasgow’s East End. It was established in 2000 and presents a varied programme of contemporary exhibitions, projects and events. We currently have a public-facing, fully accessible space at 13 Ross Street, (G1 5AR) next to the Barras market, and we share common areas with Many Studios.
Market’s ethos seeks to disrupt and question dominant narratives while fostering solidarity and collective exchange; offering an open, accessible platform for the discussion and experience of contemporary art in Glasgow and internationally. The committee programmes collaboratively using a consensus model which draws on and responds to the committee’s research interests. Through a combination of open calls and approaching artists we are committed to working in conversation with the history and diy roots of Market, and continued commitment to supportive, resilient and political practice.
About the role:
Each Artist-Programmer joins Market for a two-year term on the Committee, developing their research interests, programming collaboratively and contributing to the future direction of Market.
Market operates through a non-hierarchical, consensus-based model. Committee members work collectively with one another and with the Programme Administrator, sharing responsibility for both the artistic programme and the day-to-day running of the gallery. The role combines research and programming with practical, administrative and organisational work. This includes:
- researching, discussing and developing exhibitions, screenings, events, residencies and other projects
- approaching artists and collaborators, developing proposals and maintaining communication throughout projects
- planning and delivering events, including install, facilitation and occasional evening or weekend work
- contributing to interpretation, marketing, outreach and public communications
- working on budgets, funding applications, evaluation and reporting
- contributing to the upkeep and development of Market’s archive, Resource Library and organisational policies
- sharing responsibility for the gallery space, office, storage, equipment and other practical tasks
- taking part in wider organisational planning and decisions about Market’s future
Artist-Programmers are not expected to arrive with experience in every area – the role is recognised as one of continued, active learning and skill sharing. Responsibilities are shared across the committee according to the programme, individual interests, capacity and opportunities for learning.
The Committee is expected to engage critically with the conditions in which artist-run organisations operate. This includes ongoing discussions around artistic labour, fair pay, institutional racism, exclusion and privilege, transparency and accessibility, accountability and the sustainability of artists-led models.
Committee members should be able to dedicate approximately two days a week. This includes a weekly in-person committee meeting day at Market (currently Wednesday). This time commitment fluctuates according to the programme of events and will include work on weekends and evenings.
Each Artist-Programmer on the Committee receives a stipend of £1088 per month on a freelance basis. This amount is reviewed annually. The Committee is also supported in research and professional development; with additional funds available for short-term mentorship, courses, books, equipment, research trips or other forms of support as agreed with the board. There will also be at least one funded group research trip during your term on the Committee.
The Programme Administrator works closely with the committee, providing support across administration, finance, event production, communications, funding and organisational planning. The Programme Administrator attends the weekly meeting day.
The Board of Trustees provides governance, support and advice, particularly in relation to big-picture organisational, financial or strategic decisions. The Board meets with the Committee quarterly.
This position is supported by Creative Scotland Multi Year Funding, currently confirmed until March 2028. Funding beyond this date has not yet been confirmed. Future fundraising and financial planning will be undertaken collectively by the Committee with the help of the Programme Administrator, Creative Scotland and the Board of Trustees.
