Reproductive Technologies | Melanie Jackson, Victoria Sin, Kirsty Hendry, Alex Hetherington

July 10, 2018 4:09 pm

Reproductive Technologies is an afternoon presenting work by four artists, exploring the position of bodies within systems of production and reproduction.

The day will include a screening of work by Victoria Sin; a reading of an especially commissioned text by Kirsty Hendry; new work produced by Alexander Hetherington; and a performative lecture by Melanie Jackson.

The event is the culmination of a six month reading group. The works presented will explore how gender, motherhood, and sexual difference emerge within and produce new scientific technologies. What are the political and cultural implications of these technologies and how does language re-produce and consume different bodies?

The event is free but ticketed. You can book a space at the event via Eventbrite.

About the artists:

Melanie Jackson draws on the intimacies of knowledge at the nanoscale to the spectre of gargantuan monstrosities, there is an intrigue in the primordial to the yet-to-be-created. Melanie Jackson tries out tactics of representation which remain provisional rather than definitive, treating the gallery as a stage for experimentation with art roles. Here is mimicry, documentation, myth fabrication, cultural voyeurism, performance, animation, political commentary, music, installation, craft and the cultivation of aesthetic delight. The irresolvable contradictions in this set of maneouvres keeps her own complicity visible as part of the circulation of meanings around her art.

Victoria Sin is an artist using speculative fiction within performance, moving image, writing, and print to interrupt normative processes of desire, identification, and objectification. Drawing from close personal encounters of looking and wanting, their work presents heavily constructed fantasy narratives on the often unsettling experience of the physical within the social body.

Kirsty Hendry is an artist living in Glasgow who produces writing, events, and projects interested in practices of distribution and its relationships to language, identity, and subjectivity. Hendry’s works often entail reflection on ideas of labour, work, and the body; unpicking their effect upon our sense of selfhood and embodiment. Works often negotiate the slippages between writing and visual practices – ideas are often instigated as texts and then transposed and expanded into printed matter, video, and sculptural installation as forms of publishing.

Alexander Hetherington is a visual artist who works with film, writing, performance and publishing alongside curatorial activities in event and exhibition-making. Recent writing on Alex Millar, Margaret Salmon, Kate Davis and Laida Lertxundi. Recent and forthcoming exhibitions with Karen Cunningham, Jonathan Owen, Helen McCrorie, Catherine Street and Richard Taylor and, with Lyndsay Mann, the performative reading/screening performances ‘Utter Utter Utter’ for the closing event of ‘Here was Elsewhere: FFWD, Artists’ Moving Image’ and ‘The Singer Has Once More Risen Above the Object of His Song, or No Space is Innocent!’ as part of the event series for ‘Ulay: So You See Me’, both presented at Cooper Gallery, Dundee. Recent film includes ‘Work with Stone’ at FRACTO experimental film encounters, ACUD, Berlin.
