Friday 24th February 6pm at 13 Ross street. G1 5AR, Glasgow.

We are pleased to present a screening of Gestures (Glasgow, 2021), a collection of recorded moments by Rachael Kelly Ryder shared with Glasgow’s East-end Barras Market community. The film exhibits heritage stories, art, representation, and life; revisiting histories through an Irish-Scots lineage in the centenary year of the market’s existence. Family, pride, and treasured inheritance are among the sentiments woven into this community.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Rachael and invited guests.

“The Barras community welcomed me with open arms and allowed me to tease out these queries; all the while, I tried to draw a lineage connection between my life and the lives of this community.

We shared stories, spoke in Scottish and Irish Gaelic, explored our heritage, and asked each other ‘would you like to get to know me?’

My grandmother was born in the Liberties, Dublin; a centuries-old neighborhood, known for traditional pubs, famous markets and tourist attractions. As a child, I would go with her, speaking to the people there who taught me to barter, joke, and laugh at life.

I felt that same feeling when I came to Glasgow and the Barras Market. I felt welcome. Opposing religions, cultures, and football fans exist harmoniously throughout the market’s constellation.

I try to connect these dots of familiarity like a thread weaving in and out of linen – back and forth from person to person, memory to memory, family to family.”
