Structures of Support: Female Film Performances and Reflections on Process

In the run up to the Oscars and for our first Night School of 2018, Daniel Massie will present an overview of his research on the category and winning performances of Actress in a Supporting Role at the Academy Awards.The evening will include a screening of Massie’s re-edits that frame the performances in new and unique ways. He will reflect on how these edits impacted the research process and its central questions. He will discuss how gender, role, and stereotype intersect with The Academy in constructing value around these performances, and what this means for this specific canon of support.

Daniel is a practice PhD candidate co-supervised at the University of Glasgow and The University of Strathclyde. His research looks at supporting female film performances, the Academy Awards, and audio-visual criticism. Naturally, he is passionate about cinema and actresses. Other areas of interest include: stardom, feminist media studies, and the pedagogical use of a/v criticism and practice research. He loves food and is very keen to see Meryl Streep win her fourth Oscar.
