STUDIO PROJECT RESIDENCY OPEN CALL 2024
Overview of the Studio Project Residency
Market Gallery is excited to share that we are now accepting applications for this year’s Studio Project Residencies. We are offering two residency opportunities to emerging* artists based in Glasgow who are in need of a sustained period of reflection, research, rest and/or making. One of these opportunities is specifically for artists with caregiving responsibilities.
The Studio Project Residency is a funded residency that spans flexibly across 10 days over one month, either in December 2024 or January 2025. As part of this opportunity, the artists will also have the option to share their work through a public sharing event, allowing them to present their work in progress or research findings.
*artists who have not recently had a significant opportunity e.g. gallery representation, a sizable commission or a solo show in an established gallery.
What the opportunity includes:
- Access to Market Gallery’s studio space, alongside access to the equipment and resources available at the gallery.
- Mentoring and support provided by Market’s Programming Committee.
- Opportunity to publicly share residency reflections or work in progress. Although it is not an exhibition opportunity, we are open to the different forms this may take, for example, an open studio event, talk, reading list, visual diary or series of voice notes. The format is flexible and will be supported by the Market Gallery team.
- The artists will be required to provide documentation of their residency experience, to be shared on Market Gallery’s website and social media platforms, alongside a short written reflection.
- The artists will also be asked to recommend texts to be incorporated into our Resource Library.

Frequently Asked Questions:
We have collected some FAQs that have been coming in through our inbox.
- Is the artist fee something the artist needs to pay to take part on the residency or a payment the artist receives?
- The fee is a payment for the Artist and it is been devised following Scottish Artist Union suggested rates of pay. There are no costs to take part on the residency
- Is a single parent eligible for the caregivers residency?
- Yes! We think caregiving can be self-defined by the artist but it can include (and this list is not exhaustive) artists who are caring for children (biological and non biological), artists who support someone with a disability, artists who care for relatives, friends or chosen family on a regular basis, artists who offer care within a professional capacity, artists who are caregivers to a wider community such as movement organisers, or artists who care for other kin, among many other definitions of caregiving.
- A as a caregiver could I bring the children I am caring for into the space?
- The residency comes with an access budget that is designed to contribute towards access costs such as childcare, so artists has a focused time during the residency, but of course children are allowed to be in the space.
- Could I have access to the studio space during the weekends?
- Yes, the residency will grant you use of the Market Gallery Space at Many Studios, which has 24/7 access. Please note that on Wednesdays we will be using the space for our meetings so access on these days may be reduced.
