Overview of the Studio Project Residency

Market Gallery is excited to share that we are now accepting applications for 2026 – 2027 ’s Studio Project Residencies. We are offering two residency opportunities to emerging artists based in Glasgow who are in need of a sustained period of reflection, research and making. One of these opportunities is specifically for artists with caregiving responsibilities.

The Studio Project Residency is a funded residency that spans flexibly across 10 days over one month, either in December 2026 or January 2027. As part of this opportunity, the artists will then share their work or research publicly. The format and scale of this sharing will be developed with the Market Gallery committee to suit each artist’s practice and circumstances. These sharings will take place in February and March 2027 respectively.

We strongly encourage applications from people who are LGBTQIA+, global majority*, living with disabilities, and from working-class or low socio-economic backgrounds.

*People who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and/or have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities’.* from: Global Majority; Decolonising the language and Reframing the Conversation about Race

What the opportunity includes:

  • Access to Market Gallery’s studio space, alongside access to the equipment and resources available at the gallery.
  • Mentoring and support provided by Market’s Artist Committee.
  • A public sharing of residency outcomes, reflections or work in progress. We are open to the different forms this may take, for example: a work-in-progress exhibition, talk, screening, discussion or reading group. The format can be flexibly developed over the course of the residency period and with support from the Market Gallery team. For the December resident, the sharing event will take place in February 2027; for the January resident, the sharing event will take place in March 2027.
  • The artists will also be asked to recommend a book for our Resource Library.

Fee:

  • Artist fee  £1415 (£141.50 per day x 10 days)
  • Residency production budget   £700
  • Sharing event fee £212 (£141.50 per day x 10 days)
  • Sharing event production budget £380

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Artists must be based in Glasgow.
  • One of the opportunities is reserved for an artist with caregiving responsibilities.
  • Artist collectives are welcome to apply; however, please be aware that the artists involved will have to share the fees.
  • Applicants must not be enrolled as students during the residency period.
  • This opportunity is open to emerging artists – artists who have not recently had a significant opportunity such as gallery representation, a sizable commission, or a solo show in an established gallery. We also welcome applications from artists returning to practice after a significant break.
  • We welcome reapplications from artists who have applied unsuccessfully in previous years.

  • An access budget is available to support participation, including childcare and other caregiving costs. Support will be agreed with each artist according to their individual needs before the residency begins.

Frequently Asked Questions:

We have collected some FAQs that have been coming in through our inbox.

  • Is the artist fee something the artist needs to pay to take part on the residency or a payment the artist receives?
    • The fee is a payment for the Artist. There are no costs to take part on the residency
  • Is a single parent eligible for the caregivers residency?
    • Yes! We think caregiving can be self-defined by the artist but it can include (and this list is not exhaustive) artists who are caring for children (biological and non biological), artists who support someone with a disability, artists who care for relatives, friends or chosen family on a regular basis, artists who offer care within a professional capacity, artists who are caregivers to a wider community such as movement organisers, or artists who care for other kin, among many other definitions of caregiving.
  • As a caregiver could I bring the children I am caring for into the space?
    • The residency comes with an access budget that is designed to contribute towards access costs such as childcare, so artists has a focused time during the residency, but of course children are allowed to be in the space.
  • Could I have access to the studio space during the weekends?
    • Yes, the residency will grant you use of the Market Gallery Space at Many Studios, which has 24/7 access. Please note that on Wednesdays we will be using the space for our meetings so access on these days may be reduced.
